In SPSS, when you sort by X, Y and Z, these variables are assigned to the tables as row headings by default (probably to facilitate layout display). These items then need to be converted to column headings by dragging their variable names in pivoting trays in order to examine the information in a meaningful way, i.e. to put numbers of interest next to each other. The idea is to put a check box in the Frequencies specification dialog to choose whether the 'sort' variables are to be row or column headings. It would be a tremendous work saver if the sort variables could be specified as column headings..
Frequencies are a very basic and commonly used process, and this modification has potential to be useful to a high percentage of SPSS users who analyze survey research data.
